  • "The Basics" - Many people who attended the author breakfast at the Fall 2001 NEATE conference had asked Linda Rief for a copy of one of the poems she shared.  NEATE got in touch with the author of "The Basics", Cheryl Miller Thurston,  and received permission to post it for our members.
  • Workshop on Multicultural Literature - At at the October 2000 NEATE conference, during a panel discussion on "Negotiating Issues of Race and Other in Majority White Classrooms: Perspectives and Strategies of Teachers of Color," it became apparent that the issues the high school teachers faced in their classrooms were much more severe than the problems faced in college classrooms.
  • The Dancing Lion!  Chapters from a new novel about Vietnamese immigrant students in American schools.  The author, Steve Barry, has been a high school teacher in east San Jose, California for the past thirty years. In 1990, he moved to Independence High School which has a large Vietnamese population. Over the years, Steve formed an especially strong bond with the Vietnamese students, their families, and their community, and for seven years, he served as the faculty advisor to the school's Vietnamese cultural club. "I decided to try writing about the years I have shared with my kids," explains Steve on his site. "I have done my best to use these rich experiences to tell a story that truly portrays the character of my kids, and their beautiful culture, within the context of their adjustment to life in this country."
  • Western Mass. Writing Project - WMWP is an established K-13 professional development provider licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is a local site of the National Writing Project and an aspect of the English Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
  • Scholastic Art & Writing Awards - Now in their 76th year, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the largest and longest-running recognition programs for young people in the United States. Students from every state in the nation submit work in sixteen visual art categories and nine writing categories. Each year, The Awards receive 250,000 works of art and writing by students in grades seven through twelve.
