Teaching the Next Generation: Diversity in the English Classroom

Addressing diversity is one of our greatest challenges and opportunities. English language arts teachers have
long been aware of the diversity inherent in the teaching of writing, speaking, and the interpretation of stories
and literature. NEATE’s fall conference takes on the challenge of examining the need to respond to the
ever-growing diversity in our new twenty-first century. NEATE seeks workshop presentations that will share
educators’ own joy for learning and teaching through imaginative, energetic approaches to reading, speaking,
listening, representing, and writing.

Exemplifying the conference theme will be Friday keynote spealer Len Cabral, master storyteller and Circle
of Excellence Award winner of the National Storytelling Network, who will inspire and delight fall
conference-goers with his artistry; and Saturday brunch speaker Lisa Green, author of African American
English: A Linguistic Introduction
, who will address classroom implications of linguistic diversity and lead a
follow-up workshop.

NEATE invites teachers and graduate students at all levels of education to submit proposals for interactive
workshops for the 2010 conference (see links to proposal forms below). The theme reminds language arts
educators why they became teachers. Making sure that every child learns important skills is a laudable goal,
but so, too, is infusing children and teenagers with an expectation of success, a deep interest in learning, a
passion for reading, an appreciation for the beauty of the written and spoken word, and the pleasure of
learning with others.

For a preview of the conference program, view the 2010 conference "save the date" card, and please share it
with your colleagues. A detailed program will be posted and mailed at the end of the summer. To register for
the conference, please download the registration form in Word or .pdf form.

Attention English Education faculty! NEATE offers deep discounts to college students: $30 for a year's
membership and conference registration, or $8 to attend a single conference session. Please see the
conference chairs' letter to college supervisors for details.
